The project sought to promote profitable production chains with the highest possible added value, to make a positive impact on rural employment and generate higher incomes; it also included a social support element, promoting viable proposals in the high-Andean valleys, thus providing significant support for small-scale producers.
To meet these goals, it was indispensable to intensify the Tara [Caesalpinia Spinosa] production processes, both in natural woodlands and by enlarging the sown area. This was done by providing the project beneficiaries with training and technical assistance in processes of production, marketing, and organization, thereby consolidating a constant, good quality supply over time.
Objective: To help organized small-scale producers in the provinces of Andahuaylas and province of Chincheros to steadily increase their levels of production, productivity, and profitability in Tara cultivation, and to form links with the agri-business export market.
Project area: Region: Apurímac; provinces: Andahuaylas and Chincheros; districts: Santa María de Chicmo and Talavera de la Reina.
Source of funding: International Development Bank (IDB) – Copeme and matching funds from the Apurimac Region
